COUNTRY BLUES by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

COUNTRY BLUES

This is an example of an impressionistic floral that I love to paint.  I punched it up with a bright blue color.  These are so much fun.  I could paint these all day!

LITTLE ONES by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

LITTLE ONES

This painting is an 8x10 acrylic.  I used a palette knife to achieve the texture that you see.  The colors seem very soothing to me.  Hope you like it!

THE COURTHOUSE

This piece is mixed media of the courthouse of my hometown.  The courthouse in Newnan is beautiful.  I am happy with the result and plan to do more of this type.

BLUE PETALS by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

BLUE PETALS

This palette knife painting is an 8x8 on wrapped canvas.  My palette for the hydrangea flowers has blues, pinks, and greens.  Several of my own bushes have these colors in the blooms.  The hydrangea is one of favorite flowers and is always a source of inspiration for my paintings.

DAY ENDING by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

DAY ENDING

This palette knife painting was inspired by a photo that I took a few years ago.  The sun setting over the marsh was beautiful.

FREEDOM by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

                                                                           FREEDOM
                                                           www.charlsiesprewellartist.com

You know, the thing I like about art is that you can make it your own.  An artist has the prerogative to do anything he or she wants.  Any colors, medium, objects, and more can be used however and artist sees fit.  It is this freedom that I love as an artist.  This is exactly why I call this painting freedom.  Realistic flowers don't look like mine, but that's ok mine are just an artistic rendition.

COUNTRY ROAD by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

COUNTRY ROAD

While riding down a country road this summer, I was admiring all of the wildflowers in bloom.  This was the inspiration for this painting.  My trusty palette knife was used to compose this painting.

HAPPY by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

HAPPY

I call this painting "HAPPY" because I had so much fun with it.  I wanted somewhat of a monochromatic palette that would be soothing to the eye.  Hope you like it!

WRAPPED IN RED by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

WRAPPED IN RED

When I finished painting this, I was trying to think of something different to do to it.  I finally decided to wrap it in red.

GOLDEN PEAR by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

GOLDEN PEAR

This painting was created with a brush and palette knife.  Before eating the pear, I began looking closely and studying the different colors  that I saw. I decided to paint it! The various earth tone colors that I used, helped to give the painting depth.  I also added a dark shadow that made one side of the pear almost disappear.  It's funny how when you look closely at an object, you can see many different colors.  Try it sometime and you will see what I mean.

SOUTHERN FAVORITE by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

SOUTHERN FAVORITE

I think most people like Hydrangea blooms; myself included.  There are so many different varieties that offer a lot of different colors.  One of my bushes, has beautiful deep burgundy and blue blooms.  This is where I got my inspiration for this painting.

LOOKING GLASS by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

LOOKING GLASS

This floral painting began and ended as usual.  After studying it for days, I decided to add something different.  I used permanent marker and made lines to look like stained glass.  Not sure if I succeeded.  I would welcome your comments, good or bad.

SUNFLOWER FIELDS FOREVER by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

SUNFLOWER FIELDS FOREVER

Have you ever seen a field of sunflowers?  There is a field in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains that is just beautiful.  The sunny heads of these flowers seem to stand in attention, while others bow with grace.  When you look far in the distance, it is like a sea of yellow.  A sight like this, is inspiration to any artist.

SEPTEMBER PICKS by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

SEPTEMBER PICKS

The blooms on my "Joesph's Coat" roses are few in these dog days of summer.  I decided to put them in my bouquet on canvas.  Apples were added in anticipation of the hand picked fruit from north Georgia in just a matter of weeks.  Can't wait!

THE ROUND TABLE by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

THE ROUND TABLE

This painting is another study on painting clear glass.  It can be tricky creating the illusion, but a lot of fun trying!

THE CENTERPIECE by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

THE CENTERPIECE

Another palette knife painting consisting of small strokes to the wild long strokes.  Can you see the crackle finish in the vase?  I would appreciate your thoughts.

BIRD IN THE BRUSH by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

BIRD IN THE BRUSH

This painting was a lot of fun to compose. It is a combination of mixed media and collage.  First I covered my canvas with modeling paste for texture.  Next, I painted with green and gold tones.  I then made a copy of a bird I had previously painted and attached it.  Paint was applied over the bird to brighten it up.  Raffia and faux reeds were the last items added.  I have never done anything like this before and I am sure I will do it again.  Do you like it?

Number 18 by Charlsie Sprewell www.charlsiesprewellartist.com

NUMBER 18

Number 18 was a lot of fun to paint.  I guess my favorite cow is the Holstein.  I really like their black and white spots and how they vary on each cow.

WHAT'LL YA HAVE? by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

WHAT'LL YA HAVE?

The famous "Varsity" sign seen in downtown Atlanta is the subject of this painting.  So many, near and far, know of this retro fast food eatery.  Can't you just hear them saying "what'll ya have"?

UP ON THE HILL by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

UP ON THE HILL

I did this painting with my palette knife.  A lot scraping and upward strokes made the texture that you see.

ZINNIA BOUQUET by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net www.charlsiesprewellartist.com

ZINNIA BOUQUET

After attending a luncheon a few weeks ago,  I knew I wanted to paint some Zinnias.  On the center of the table was the most beautiful bouquet of flowers from the hostesses garden.  The Zinnias really stood out among the other flowers.  This is the result.  Using the tip of my palette knife, made the tiny petals in this painting.  Hope you enjoy!

THREE PINKS by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net www.charlsiesprewellartist.com

THREE PINKS
This painting of three pink roses is done with a brush instead of my typical palette knife.  I really like the contrast of colors in this painting.  Hope you enjoy!

"Party Dress" by Charlsie Sprewell cfspre@bellsouth.net

PARTY DRESS
This is 30x30 wrapped canvas.  The colors are a monochromatic bluish/gray.  The photo shows it to be more blue. Use of my palette knife provided all of the wonderful texture. The inspiration for this painting came one day when I was thinking about my favorite dress.  I think every girl, young or old, has a memory of a special occasion where that favorite dress was worn.  Do you remember yours?

Floral/Garden art: White Petals charlsiesprewellartist.com

White Petals
The sun was almost gone at the end of the day. As I sat in my garden room, everything around me seemed to fade away into darkness.  There was one exception....the white petals.  My pots of impatients and begonias seemed to deny the darkness.  They glowed like moonlight.  I was so intrigued and began thinking of a friend from my past who used to have a "moon" garden.  Everything blooming was white.  With this in mind, I painted my version of  "White Petals".  Who knows, one day, I might just plant my own "moon" garden.

I am so proud to celebrate the birthday of our dear country.  There are so many to thank for the freedom that we have.  My prayers are with them all!

This painting titled "Lemonade" reminds me of 4th of July celebrations.

Why a bird nest means so much to me. cfspre@bellsouth.net

Gardening and nature is something that I enjoy very much.  In 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  A few weeks after I began chemo treatments, my hair began falling out.  On a Sunday afternoon, I was sitting in my garden room running my fingers through my hair and watching the breeze carry the clumps away.  I was trying to come to terms with being bald as I had made the to decision to have my head shaved that night.  A few months later, my husband was out cutting the grass.  He was cutting in the middle of the lawn where there were no trees.  He looked down and saw the most perfect little bird nest sitting there on top of the grass.  He picked it up and brought it to me.  It was so little and precious.  Guess what was in it?  That's right...strands of my hair!  By this time treatments were taking a toll on my body, but this little nest told me that God would take care of me just like he does the birds.  I knew I would be just fine, and I am.  Glory be to God!

Redo

charlsiesprewellartist.comThis a 24x24 acrylic painting.  I started this painting a few months ago and was not happy with it.  I put it away and brought it back out today.  The colors were just not working for me.  I played and played until I was happy with the outcome.  Just goes to say that an artist should never throw out a painting because you don't like it.  Put it away and bring it back out later.  A fresh eye can make all the difference needed.  I am so glad it is finally finished.  Woo Hoo!      cfspre@bellsouth.net

All That Jazz 12x12 cfspre@bellsouth.net

I began this painting after a trip to New Orleans a few months ago.  The unique atmosphere of this southern city put a desire in me to paint a jazz musician.  I have several other photos from this trip that I plan to paint.  I knew when I started that I wanted to have color showing through in the dark areas of the painting.  I think it makes it much more interesting.  Don't you agree?

First painting posted.

This is an 11x14 acrylic painting.  My favorite subject to paint is florals.  I love using bright colors and layering the paint.

My first blog!

I am so excited about writing my first blog!  Painting is a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing it with others.  I love creating and playing with the paint on my canvas.  Acrylic has been my choice of medium for the last few years.  I have had experience with watercolor and oils too.  Using a palette knife is my favorite way to paint. Spreading, carving and scraping with my knife is so much fun.  It is freeing in a way because the knife can make so many interesting marks and I don't feel like I have to stay in the "lines".  I guess that is all for now.  Talk to you soon!
